Understanding Dangerous Goods in Cargo Transport Units course outlines the classification such as explosives, flammable liquids, toxic substances, and corrosive materials alongside the dangers and risks of each category. The course also covers regulatory compliance and documentation alongside labeling and packaging requirements, all which guarantee safe transit. Steps for identifying hazards, assessing risks, and implementing emergency response actions during spills, leaks, or accidents while transporting cargo units will be provided. The course also covers best practices for loading and securing dangerous goods in cargo units as well as defining the roles and responsibilities of shippers, carriers, and handlers. Attendees will have the knowledge and skills to reduce risks while managing hazardous materials and ensuring safe transport by the end of the course.

At the end of this course, participants will understand the practical skills and knowledge needed for identifying, managing, and safely moving dangerous goods from one transport unit to another, while abiding by international prescribed practices, and ensuring health and safety risks are minimized.

Identifying Dangerous Goods in Cargo

  • Know how to identify dangerous goods through a classification system which incorporates explosiveness, flammability, and toxicity as categories.
  • Understand the relevant IMDG Code, ADR, and IATA DGR for classifying and labeling pieces of dangerous goods.

Regulations and Standards for Dangerous Goods Transport

  • Understand the international and local regulations pertaining to the movement of dangerous goods with respect to labeling, packaging, and documentation.
  • Learn the safety requirements pertaining to the movement of hazardous materials by road, air, and sea.

Proper Packaging and Labeling of Dangerous Goods

  • Understand how proper wrapping methods ensure containment of dangerous goods to guard against spilling, leakage, or accidents during transportation.
  • Know the marking and labeling requirements of hazardous materials meant for transport so that stakeholders have accurate hazard portrayal information.

Safe Handling and Storage of Dangerous Goods

  • Determine the safe handling procedures for dangerous goods, including the use of PPE, and specialized tools, and protective clothing that are appropriate for the task.
  • Cover how to safely store dangerous goods while in transit to avoid risk of exposure, and compliance with safety protocols.

Rapid Action and Spill Control Procedures

  • Acquire skill in emergency response actions for spills or accidents involving dangerous goods, including clean-up actions, reporting, and first care treatment of injuries.
  • Become familiar with safety data sheet (SDS) risk management documents and their relevancy in emergency situations and how to control them.

Training will be conducted via Microsoft Team Meeting, online. Meeting invites will be shared on the day before the first day of training.
