Storage of Flammable Liquids Safely in Tanks - PSC/COU-1019

This course is designed to apply to above and below-ground fixed bulk storage tanks. It applies to premises where flammable liquids are stored in individual tanks or groups of tanks. It may also be applied to portable or skid-mounted vessels with capacities in excess of 1000 liters.

It also gives guidance on the design, construction, operation, and maintenance of installation used for the storage of flammable liquids in fixed and transportable tanks operating at or near atmospheric pressure.

It will help you assess the risks arising from the use of flammable liquids and decide how to control those risks.

The course is one of three modules dealing with fire and explosion hazards associated with flammable liquids. The other two are:

  • Storage of flammable liquids in containers HSG51;
  • Safe use and handling of flammable liquids HSG140.

It supplements the advice contained in Dangerous substances and explosive atmospheres: Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations 2002. Approved Code of Practice and guidance L138. 

Instructional contact-time must be a minimum of 8 hours.

  3. Risk Assessment: Identifying and assessing potential hazards and risks associated with flammable liquid storage tanks, evaluating the likelihood and impact of identified hazards and risks, implementing risk control measures
  4. Tank Design and Construction: Understanding the principles of tank design and construction for flammable liquid storage, familiarizing with design and construction requirements for different types of flammable liquids, implementing appropriate tank design and construction for different situations
  5. Communication and Coordination: Understanding the importance of effective communication and coordination in flammable liquid storage tank safety, implementing a communication plan for flammable liquid storage tank safety, coordinating with relevant parties such as emergency services and other organizations
  6. Emergency Planning and Response: Developing emergency response plans for flammable liquid storage tanks, understanding the requirements for emergency shutdowns and isolation, training employees on emergency response procedures
  7. Inspection and Auditing: Conducting regular inspections and audits of flammable liquid storage tank safety practices, identifying and addressing potential hazards during inspections and audits, reviewing and updating flammable liquid storage tank safety plans and procedures
  8. Case Studies and Real-world examples: Understanding the application of flammable liquid storage tank safety techniques in different settings, analyzing case studies of successful and unsuccessful flammable liquid storage tank safety, identifying best practices and lessons learned from real-world examples
  9. Conclusion: Review of key concepts and best practices for safe storage of flammable liquids in tanks, importance of ongoing commitment to safety and compliance with regulations, resources for further information and support.

Training will be conducted via Microsoft Team Meeting, online. Meeting invites will be shared on the day before the first day of training.
