Safety in The Storage and Handling of Steel and Other Metal Stock aims to minimize the danger involved in the unsafe storage and handling of steel and other metallic stock. Attendees will gain knowledge of the dangers posed by sharp edge protector for sheet metal, heavy load, slips, trip and fall. Safest practices for storage, including, but not limited to, stacking materials, securing them so that they do not shift, and provision of enough space for aisles and walkways are discussed in detail. It offers principles for safe handling such as using lifting aids, PPE, and even manual methods of lifting to prevent injuries.
Participants at the end of this course will appreciate the required best practice procedures that meet the operational safety standards for the storage and handling of metals and steel stocks as well as the associated industry safety standards which include but are not limited to:

Understanding the Hazards Associated with Steel and Metal Stock

  • Identify serious hazards associated with both storage and handling of metal materials such as steel like sharp edges of the material, heavy lifting requirements, and risks of structures collapsing.
  • Understand safety risks which include cuts, crushing injuries, and accidents during moves or storage, and be able to perform effective risk assessments.

Implementing Safe Storage Practices

  • Understand the best methods for safe storage of steel and metal stock including stabilizing materials, proper shelving and racking systems, and material organization.
  • Understand how proper stacking techniques, clear walkways, preventive markings, and labeling improve accident prevention and workplace safety.

Safe Handling Techniques for Metal Stock

  • Be able to safely handle steel and metal stock, with focus on proper lifting equipment such as cranes and forklifts, PPE usage, and correct manual handling techniques.
  • Appreciate the need for training and team coordination during manual handling to reduce the risks of injuries from handling heavy or bulky materials.

Compliance with Safety Regulations and Standards

  • Understand the legal obligations for secure storage and handling of metal stock, including OSHA, ISO, and other relevant industry standards.
  • Learn about safety maintenance procedures, routine inspections, and the record keeping required for hazard assessments and equipment maintenance.

Promoting a Culture of Safety and Continuous Improvement

  • Define the steps to develop a safety-first culture by promoting safe handling practices, PPE use, and active engagement in risk management.

Training will be conducted via Microsoft Team Meeting, online. Meeting invites will be shared on the day before the first day of training.
