Managing Health and Safety in Dockwork course examines the operational safety issues related to docks, especially those safety concerns that are particular to docks and wharves. Participants will learn about the primary dangers associated with dock work including falls from height, manual handling injuries, slips or trips, vehicular and cargo movement, and exposure to harmful materials and substances. This course covers proper safety practices such as loading and unloading procedures, traffic control, crane and lifting appliance usage, and emergency plan development. Special attention is given in this course to risk assessment and hazard control measures, as well as the practitioner’s understanding of safety legislation like OSHA, ILO Dock Safety Conventions, and other statutory instruments issued by the port authority. This course is focused on dockworkers, supervisors, and safety officers, so learners have both theoretical and practical understanding by the end of the training to be able to manage the risks associated with a working dock. At the closing of this course, participants will have a good command of how to control risk exposure, apply safety measures, and improve the overall safety in dock work operations.

At the end of this course, learners will be able to mitigate dockwork health and safety risks, ensure compliance, effective risk avoidance, and all safety mitigation efforts needed within the dock environment.

Introduction to Health and Safety in Dockwork

  • Understanding Health and Safety in Dockwork occurs by exposing learners to the most pertinent risks in dockwork which includes mechanisms for dealing with environmental, manual, and machinistic work-related falls.
  • Appreciate the relevance of safety planning, protocols, systematic procedures, assessments, and strategizing toward accident and injury prevention within dockwork environments.

Safety Regulations and Compliance in Dockwork

  • Appreciate the depth of the composite legally defined dockwork framework which incorporates OSHA, maritime safety provisions, and local health and safety laws.
  • Know how the above laws are effectively implemented to ensure all offshore/dockside operations are performed within stipulated safety regulatory frameworks.

Safe Loading and Unloading of Cargo with Equipment

  • Know the procedures for the safe loading and unloading of cargo which incorporate the driving of cranes and forklift trucks, and the operation of other relevant equipment.
  • Discuss hazardous risks posed by cargo and how they may be controlled in the movement and storage of materials at the dock.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for Dockworkers

  • Discuss core critical high visibility PPE such as vests, dock trousers, helmets, gloves, and safety shoes used at the docks.
  • Explain selection and maintenance rationales for specific protective equipment and their roles in guarding employees against certain dangers associated with dock work.

Emergency Procedures and Rescue Operations in Dockwork

  • Describe auxiliary first response measures for barging and other machine-related injuries, as well as for falling overboard.
  • Justify the importance of teaching basic rescue procedure concepts, first aid, evacuation, and response to industrial emergency situations in relation to swift action towards dock emergency scenarios.

Training will be conducted via Microsoft Team Meeting, online. Meeting invites will be shared on the day before the first day of training.

Candidates will be provided a hard bound or soft material covering the whole course which can also be accessed through Phoenix LMS (learning management system) i.e. www.phoenixcpd.com
