Managing Health and Safety for Toxic Substances course equips learners with skills needed to manage risks of handling, storing and disposing of toxic materials in the workplace. Learners will become proficient with the consequences of chemical hazards, routes of exposure, its effects on human health and the best toxic management practices. Some areas of focus that the program cover includes hazard recognition, safety data sheets (SDS), ventilation systems, spill cleanup procedures, and personal protective equipment utilization. Emphasis is placed on compliance with OSHA’s Hazard Communication Standard (HCS) and COSSH regulations as well as GHS classification compliance. The training is aimed at safety practitioners, chemical handlers, and supervisors, in which the participants learn the best practices that reduce risk and promote safe environments involving toxic substances. At completion of the program, students will be ready to promote health and safety within the workplace lawfully, and manage hazardous substances in a safe manner.

Upon completion of this course, learners will be knowledgeable of the tools and tactics useful in managing any potential workplace toxic health and safety risks, ensuring compliance with safety policies while preventing exposure to dangerous chemicals within the work environment.

Understanding Toxic Substances and Their Risks

  • Explore the numerous classes of toxic substances to include chemicals, biological agents, and gaseous agents alongside their potential health dangers.
  • Grasp the various methods of exposure such as breathing in (inhalation), skin penetration (absorption), and eating (ingestion). Examine their impacts on human health.

Health and Safety Regulations for Toxic Substances

  • Embrace pertinent health and safety regulations like OSHA’s Hazard Communication Standard (HCS), other under-local by-laws, which govern practice in relation to toxic substances.
  • Value adherence to these laws for the sake of the protection of the workers and avoidance of legal conflicts in case of exposure to harmful materials.

Risk Assessment and Control Measures for Toxic Substances

  • Master how to perform a risk assessment concerning toxic substances used within a certain place of work.
  • Examine methods for control of exposure like efficient air flow (ventilation) systems, containment protocols, as well as the application of protective body equipment (PPE).
