Machine Safety and Safe Operations course is designed to teach students how to operate machinery safely in order to avoid accidents and injuries in the workplace. Students will learn to understand mechanical hazards, risks that are typical to machines, and how to control them. Important subjects include the following, but are not limited to: machine guarding, LOTO (lock out/tag out) procedures, emergency shut-off systems, and the functioning of automated machinery. The student's understanding will also include operator risk assessment, assignment of duties, and adherence to safety measures such as OSHA, ISO 12100, and ANSI B11 norms. This training is oriented to machine operators, supervisors, and safety officers, providing practical knowledge to improve workplace safety without compromising productivity. Students will be able to recognize, develop, and implement safety measures while guaranteeing the safe operation of machinery in various industries upon completion of this course.

By the end of this module, learners will be equipped with the practical work and knowledge necessary to appropriately operate machines, avoid mechanical dangers, and uphold safety standards in industrial and workplace environments.

Understanding Mechanical Hazards and Risk Factors

  • Recognize basic mechanical risks such as entrapment, crushing, shearing, and cutting.
  • Grasp how human factors, inadequate maintenance, and poor design contribute to automation accidents.

Machine Guarding and Safety: The Implementation of Guarding and Safety Devices

  • Understand the various types of machine guards and their application towards mitigating risks.
  • Learn the prevention enhancement that interlocks, emergency stop, and presence sensing system devices play.

Safe Operation Procedures and Best Practices

  • Understand how to implement the standardized correct procedures for operating various machines in industrial settings.
  • Familiarize with pre-start checklists, lockout/tagout (LOTO), and safe start/stop protocol.

Training and Supervision with Machine Operator Teacher

  • Discuss the value of demonstrating mastery of operations in training equipment operators and maintenance personnel.
  • Understand how safety behaviors of machine operation can be taught, assessed, and positively reinforced.

Safety Standards and Regulations Compliance

  • Grasp important legislation on machine safety like OSHA 1910 Subpart O or ISO 12100.
  • Know how to perform audits, inspections, and documentation for compliance. An auditing toolkit is available to assist with the task.

Training will be conducted via Microsoft Team Meeting, online. Meeting invites will be shared on the day before the first day of training.
