Health and Safety in Engineering Workshops course provides introductory training in safety for engineering workshop participants with an understanding on how to control and eliminate hazards within their work environment. The course involves moving machinery, sharp tools, electrical dangers, exposure to dangerous materials, risk of fire, and manual handling injuries. Students will be instructed on proper machine guarding, personal protective equipment (PPE) use, proper chemical handling, emergency action plans, and other health and safety legislation requirements. Particular attention is given to risk assessment, accident prevention plans, and minimum workplace incident procedures. The training is intended for engineers, workshop supervisors, technicians, and safety officers so that they may recognize health and safety violations, implement safety rules, and strengthen organizational safety culture. Upon the completion of this program workshop participants will have resources to increase engineering workshop safety, control risks, and enhance operational functionality.

After finishing this course, students will have the necessary knowledge and skills to maintain a safe and compliant working environment in engineering workshops concerning machinery, tools, and hazardous materials, thereby mitigating associated risks.

Recognizing Potential Hazards in Engineering Workshops

  • Recognize various workshop hazards such as moving parts of machines, electrical hazards, and hazardous substances.
  • Identify unsafe behaviors and situations that could result from improper tool use and poor housekeeping.

Operating Workshop Machinery

  • Identify parameters for operating lathes, drills, grinders, and CNC machines.
  • Take necessary measures to safeguard against equipment, tool, and personnel injuries that may occur from operating or using the equipment.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

  • Identify the relevant Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) including gloves, goggles, ear defenders, and safety boots.
  • Manage the correct selection, maintenance, and application of PPE concerning the engineering tasks and machinery to control risk. These include engineering design risks assigned to the tasks.

Electrical Safety and Control of Hazards

  • Be aware of the dangers of workshop electrical equipment and how to work with it safely.
  • Apply electrical safety including lockout/tagout and checking tools and machines for safety.

Follow Shop Safety Policies and Procedures

  • Comply with the specific health and safety legislation including OSHA, ISO 45001, and other relevant local engineering safety laws.
  • Develop and implement a workshop safety program, conduct risk evaluation exercises, and formulate a comprehensive emergency action plan.

Training will be conducted via Microsoft Team Meeting, online. Meeting invites will be shared on the day before the first day of training.

Candidates will be provided a hard bound or soft material covering the whole course which can also be accessed through Phoenix LMS (learning management system) i.e. www.phoenixcpd.com

Successful candidates will be awarded with completion certificate awarded by Phoenix Safety Consultants UK
