Fundamentals of Electrical Safety course introduces learners to the fundamentals and scope of prevention of risks as well as the best methods of working with or near electric systems. Electric shocks, arc flashes, and fires are potential hazards that attendees will learn along with how to control them. Other relevant issues include basic concepts of grounding and bonding, operating electrical equipment, LOTO (lockout/tagout) practices, and personal protective equipment (PPE) selection. Greater focus on hazard detection, emergencies, and compliance to safety regulations within the industry such as NFPA 70E, OHS, and IEC will also be discussed. Electricians, maintenance workers, engineers, and safety managers are the target audience that will be equipped to meet the bare minimum for electrical risk, safety measures, and safety in the working area. Risk elimination, heightened workplace safety, and adherence to guidelines on electric safety are some of the objectives that these learners will be able to achieve by the end of the learning.

This course ensures students learn electrical safety practices to provide a safe working environment and mitigate risks associated with electrical hazards and accidents.

Understanding Electrical Hazards and Risks

  • Identify electric shocks, arc flashes, and electrical fires as common electrical hazards, and learn about their risks.
  • Understand that equipment failure, inadequate wiring, and negligence can cause accidents and learn measures to avert them in the workplace.

Electrical Safety Standards and Regulations

  • Familiarize yourself with OSHA and the National Electric Code (NEC) as benchmarks for workplace safety.
  • Learn how lack of compliance with electrical safety standards can amplify risks to personnel and equipment and their safety.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for Electrical Safety

  • Demonstrate knowledge of electrical work PPEs, including rubber gloves, insulated tools, and arc-rated clothing associated with the work, and their preventive capability against injuries.
  • Learn to ensure adequate protection of workers through the proper selection, maintenance, and inspection of electrical PPEs.

Lockout-Tagout (LOTO) Procedures

  • Understand the controlling of hazardous energy during maintenance or repair work through the application of Lockout-Tagout (LOTO) procedures.
  • Implement Plant Safety Protocols and Procedures: Preparation and Maintenance of Equipment Goals.
  • Understand isolation techniques and learn how to apply them in practice and follow LOTO (Lock Out Tag Out) procedures to ensure all electrical equipment has been de-energized prior to starting any work.

Responding to Emergencies and Administering First Aid for Electrical Incidents

  • Learn other first aid techniques for electrical emergencies such as electric shock or arc flash injury

Training will be conducted via Microsoft Team Meeting, online. Meeting invites will be shared on the day before the first day of training.
