Designing and Operating Safe Chemical Reaction Processes course is focused on the design and operation of chemical reaction processes, emphasizing safety and risk management. They are usually conducted within specified limits; however, chemical reactions may involve significant risks such as thermal runaway, pressure increase, toxic gas emission, and side reactions. This includes study of reaction kinetics, process hazard analysis (PHA), inherent safety features, emergency relief system design, and the contribution of instrumentation and automation towards the disabling of processes that lead to instrumented safety system (ISS) failure. Participants will learn how to implement safety measures relating to OSHA's Process Safety Management (PSM,) CCPS Guidelines and other industry practices in mitigating risks from exothermic reactions, flammable substances, and reactive chemicals. Advanced training, with real case studies and hands-on problem-solving exercises, enables chemical engineers, process safety specialists, and plant operators to optimize the safe and efficient operation of chemical reaction processes with respect to hazards, protection, and regulatory compliance requirements.

Step by step, this course will lead participants through the key concepts and relevant practices needed to design and operate a safe reaction process, optimize it for performance, and balance safety compliance seamlessly and without interference.

Comprehending the Basics of Chemical Reactions and Process Systems

  • Discover important concepts governing chemical reactions and processes, such as kinetics, thermodynamics, and mass transfer, as they are fundamental to the creation of safe and effective processes.
  • Know how to design a chemical reaction system considering the safety of the mechanisms involved, hazards, and process conditions to guarantee a controllable system.

Risk Recognition and Management for Chemical Reaction Processes

  • Learn to recognize and outline the potential hazards in any chemical reaction processes, including but not limited to thermal runaway, pressure buildup, and toxic hazards.
  • Familiarize yourself with risk assessment methodologies like HAZOP and fault tree analysis for evaluating and managing associated risks in chemical reactions.

Establish Safe Operation Implemented Through Control Systems

  • Make discoveries concerning control systems like temperature, pressure, and flow control, noting how each is integrated to ensure safe reaction operations during chemical reactions.
  • Learn to design mechanisms for fail-safety, alarming devices, and systems for emergency shutdowns to deal more effectively with unusual operating conditions.

Safety Measures for Dealing With Each Reactant and By-Product Products

  • Have knowledge of safety measures as to hazardous reactants and by-products safety situations, including storage, movement, and containment practices.
  • Understand how to reduce environmental and health hazards by designing systems for by-product treatment or disposal, also referred to as 'exposure minimization'.

Monitoring Procedures, Maintenance, and Emergencies Post Chemical Reactions

  • Learn how to operate monitoring for control systems during and after the chemical reaction processes, including compliance with safety and other legal requirements.
  • Understand the maintenance procedures for reaction systems and the pre-emergency activities such as chemical spill control, fire preparedness, safety for personnel, etc.

Training will be conducted via Microsoft Team Meeting, online. Meeting invites will be shared on the day before the first day of training.

Candidates will be provided a hard bound or soft material covering the whole course which can also be accessed through Phoenix LMS (learning management system) i.e. www.phoenixcpd.com

Successful candidates will be awarded with completion certificate awarded by Phoenix Safety Consultants UK

This course will be useful for a wide range of professionals including but not limited to:

  • Safety managers and coordinators having major responsibilities of occupational safety and health.
  • Supervisors and team leaders
  • Environmental health and safety specialists
  • Construction workers and site managers
  • Manufacturing and industrial plant workers
  • Human resources personnel for better understanding of occupational safety and health to support business continuity
  • Facility managers
  • Risk and insurance managers
  • Health and safety consultants
  • Office and administrative workers
  • Anyone who wants to develop a deeper understanding of the principles and practices of occupational health and safety, and how to minimize workplace hazards and ensure the well-being of employees.
  • Anyone carrying out chemical reaction processes, including employees and the self-employed; and safety consultants and advisers.
