COSHH Assessments Step by Step Guidelines course offers a practical procedure to assisting with COSHH (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health) assessments within the workplace. It helps participants recognize, assess, and manage the risks which are posed by hazardous substances while ensuring that legal requirements for health and safety. The course starts with an overview of COSHH regulations and how they govern the welfare of workers when exposed to harmful substances. Participants will learn how to identify chemicals, dust, fumes, biological agents, and other hazardous substances that may exist in their workplace and also to find the proper firefighting measures for a hazardous substance. The phased approach begins with evaluation of the risks, identifying those who may be affected and to what extent, and reviewing the existing control measures even if they provide sufficient protection. Effective control measures, substitution, application control engine, and personal protective equipment (PPE) are discussed in detail for planning practice guidance. The course also aims to provide understanding about reviewing and updating COSHH assessments and the processes involved to meet required standards. Participants will gain more skills and knowledge necessary in performing comprehensive COSHH assessments as well as mitigating risks to establish a safe working environment for all employees.

After attending the provided class, participants will have the capability to conduct workplace harm risk assessments using the COSHH (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health) framework within organizational safety protocols satisfying operational protective standards such as:

Understanding the COSHH Regulations and Legal Requirements

  • Obtain knowledge about legal and administrative boundaries of controlling risk to life and management of hazardous substances and their safe handling.
  • Interpret obligations of employers and employees in the frame of COSHH with respect to risk assessment and settled occupational health and safety standards in the workplace.

Identifying Hazardous Substances and Risk Factors

  • Demonstrate the ability to outline hazardous materials as those which are chemicals, biological agents, and dust relevant to work environment.
  • Demonstrate the ability to assess the risks to health and safety associated with these materials and, along with the assessment, classify them into categories based on the degree of hazard that they represent.

Conducting a Comprehensive COSHH Risk Assessment

  • Teaching how to carry out the processes of a complete COSHH assessment which comprise of identifying hazardous substances, evaluating risks associated with exposure and estimating health effects related with exposure.
  • Use original control measures for assessing risk posed by substances in the workplace and propose refined safeguards.

Implementing Control Measures and Safe Practices

  • Recognize how to apply control measures involving the use of ventilation, PPE, and substitution of more benign substances.
  • Know the correct procedures for issuing and following safety instructions, including proper handling procedures.

Monitoring and Reviewing COSHH Assessments

  • Highlight the constant requirement to update and monitor COSHH assessments to ensure relevance and effectiveness.
  • Identify gaps and changes within the work environment or with the materials that require corresponding adjustments to the established safety measures.

Training will be conducted via Microsoft Team Meeting, online. Meeting invites will be shared on the day before the first day of training.
