Defensive Driving course trains drivers on the most effective techniques to prevent and mitigate road accidents while driving. For instance, all drivers should learn how to recognize the potential hazards on a roadway so that they can effectively respond to them beforehand, thus engaging in safer driving practices. Additionally, how to make proactive decisions, perceive and assess road hazard risks, and properly avoid collisions are also effective techniques covered that better road safety overall. The most critical principles of a proactive mindset such as effective spatial driver monitoring, airspace and following vehicle awareness, weather influences spatial monitoring, and reaction to vehicular aggression are all taught. Further, participants are introduced to vehicle control, emergency stopping, and routine vehicle inspection and repair procedures designed to eliminate mechanical defects. Concentration on reducing the human factor is offered based on the optimization of driving under fatigue or impairment as well as compliance with traffic rules and safety regulations. In live case discussions, synthetic and practical exercises, and participatory demonstrations, this instruction intends for professional drivers, fleet supervisors/controllers, and any person who desires to increase his or her driving proficiency. In the end, the learner will be ready to demonstrate the necessary driving skills and knowledge to ensure not only his or her own safety and that of other road users, but to develop a culture of safer driving.

Upon completion, participants will have the knowledge and practical skills needed to drive in a safe proactive manner which will greatly reduce the risk of accidents and enhance their response to hazardous road situations.

Concepts of Defensive Driving

  • Be familiar with attributes of defensive driving such as alertness, anticipation, and steps taken to avoid accidents well before they happen.
  • Discover how to detect possible dangerous conditions in a traffic environment and maintain control of any moving vehicle.

Safe Driving Under Hazardous Conditions

  • Master dealing with adverse weather conditions such as rain, fog, snow, and ice, and safety in low visibility situations.
  • Acquire the ability to maneuver through heavy traffic without increasing the risk of collisions by staying away from other vehicles and adapting to the flow of movements of other drivers.

Understanding Risks and Avoiding Collisions

  • Ability to evaluate the possibility of road threats such as other road users like distracted drivers or other objects in the vehicle’s trajectory and take actions that will ensure one does not collide with any of the objects.
  • Learn how to use some of the protective tools available in the vehicle such as brakes, mirrors, and lights to avert accidents and injuries on self and others.

How To Handle Emergencies

  • Know the appropriate response practices concerning emergencies that interrupt the normal flow of driving, which include blowing out tires, completing engine failures, and obstacles that suddenly appear on the road.
  • Know how to perform advanced steering techniques as well as emergency braking to unavoidably avoid an accident that is bound to happen in the critical phase of driving.

Laws and Regulations Related to Road Safety

  • Have an understanding of the fundamental rules concerning road safety such as speed limits, sign postings, and driving under the influence (DUI) while within the legal framework.
  • Know the legal regulations surrounding driving and how these laws support road safety and how one learns about new and old information around and within the region about driving rules at State and National levels.
